The 177th Convention passed this canonical amendment as presented by the Committee on Canons.
As authorized by Canon 21.03, the Committee on Canons has reported a substitute. The Committee concluded that Canon 22.01 should continue to function as a rule of construction and revised the proposed amendment accordingly. The substitute also includes conforming amendments to remove gendered pronouns from other canons. In all other respects, the Committee on Canons finds the substitute suitable in form for adoption.

Proponent’s Explanation
The Canons should accurately reflect the full inclusion of all baptized members in the life and leadership of the Church. Revising the Canons to use neutral language brings the text into alignment with the Church’s theological affirmation that all people are called to ministry and leadership. Beyond precision, inclusive language sends a meaningful signal that all offices are genuinely open to all people, and it keeps the Diocese consistent with the broader trend toward neutral drafting reflected in General Convention actions. Accordingly, the Diocese should amend its Canons to remove gendered terms and adopt neutral alternatives throughout.
